Harold George, 91, of Nacogdoches died Monday, November 7, 2016 of natural causes at a Nacogdoches nursing home. He was born December 7, 1924, in Manning, Texas, in Angelina County. He was preceded in death by his father, John Perry George, and mother, Rosie Ester Hales. Mr. George is survived by his daughter Susan Brown, son-in-law Larry Brown, and two grandchildren, all of Columbia, Maryland.
A graduate of Sam Houston State Teacher’s College in 1954, Mr. George enjoyed a career as a teacher of various types of construction and woodwork.
A veteran of World War II, Mr. George was transferred during the war from the Air Force to the Army due to a need for replacement ground troops in Europe. He participated in the invasion of Germany, and photos document his unit liberating the survivors at one of the concentration camps.
Mr. George loved the game of golf, and played regularly at Mansfield Country Club until his 90th birthday. A keen fan of sports, he always kept up with the Texas Rangers and the PGA tour. Mr. George loved and appreciated nature and the outdoors, and was an avid bird watcher. In the recent past, he frequently visited Carthage to listen to the fine musicians at the Country Music Hayride.
Harold George will be missed by many. His friends and relatives best described him as “kind and generous,” which was certainly true. At Mr. George’s request, there will be no formal memorial service.
