He was born March 26, 1924 in Hill City, Minnesota to George A. Hanson and Mavone H. Dean. George’s family came to Muskegon in June of 1929. He graduated from Muskegon High School. During his high school years he played basketball, football, and baseball. In January of 1943, during WWII, he entered into the Navy. He took part in the Omaha Invasion on June 6, 1945 aboard LST 292 as a Boatswains Mate. George made 56 trips across the English Channel, including trips to Germany, Belgium, Norway and Mont Saint-Michel, in France. He returned home and was honorably discharged in February of 1946.
George then was a plasterer and plaster contractor for about 9 years and later was a manager for a life insurance company. He, next, was a Home Office Instructor for another insurance company out of Cleveland, OH and Chicago, IL. He joined Continental Motor Company in the Aircraft Engine Department and worked on the production scheduling of Beach Aircraft Engines. George also worked as an advertising manager for Zephyr Gasoline for 10 years covering Michigan and Wisconsin. After owning a general store for a few years at Big Star Lake near Baldwin, he worked as a security guard for Pinkerton and Burns for 18 years as well.
In 1968, George became president of the Mona Shores Boys Club and coached little league football for 9 years and Baseball for 8 years.
In August of 1946, he married Doris Norton and had 5 wonderful children. After 30 years of marriage, they were divorced. He then was married on June 25, 1976 to Margaret J. Martin and remained married for 38 years. George became a stepfather to 13 of her children during this time.
George is predeceased by his parents; his brother, LaMoyne; and his children, Gail and Laura.
George is survived by his wife; his children, Steven, Eric, and Michael; his stepchildren, Charles, Andy, Jeff, Janet, Ken, Tony, Tim, Nancy, Dale, Larry, Elaine, Pat, and Jerry; 57 grandchildren; 49 great grandchildren.
A service for George will be on Friday, September 26, 2014 at 12:10 PM at St. Michaels Catholic Church, 1716 6th St in Muskegon. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at St. Michaels.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Michaels Catholic Church or to Hospice of Michigan at 989 Spaulding SE, Ada, MI 49301.
