Luke David Vandegrift passed into the arms of our loving Father at the age of 31 on March 29th, 2023. He was predeceased by his grandmothers Susan Vandegrift and Julia Hobbs. He was born October 22,1991 to David and Julie Vandegrift, who treasure him and their surviving children, Chelsea Vandegrift (Andrew) Miller, Mark (Johanna) Vandegrift, Laura Vandegrift (Nathan) Hartley, Claire Vandegrift, and Colette Vandegrift. Luke was playful and thoughtful from his earliest years with his five siblings, later also committed himself wholeheartedly to competitive team sports, especially baseball, and always relished any good-hearted contest where he took care to adapt the game to create enjoyment for participants of all ages and abilities. Luke enjoyed family vacations with his grandparents, aunts and uncles, and 76 cousins. He spent many hours of fun, hilarity and navigating the challenges of young adulthood with his childhood friends, Alec and Eric Macedo and his brother Mark, even up to days before his departure from this world. Nearing his adult years, Luke wanted the best out of life and found a tremendous longing for a deeper purpose. He struggled mightily with addiction for twelve years, finding a period of relative respite and accomplishment in the nearly two years before now being enveloped in God’s mercy and love. During this time, Luke generously assisted his grandmother in her final years with gentle encouragement and strength before she too departed to her final rest this year. This time allowed Luke’s family to share treasured moments of understanding and love, support and encouragement. While not the victory he and his loved ones hoped for, we accept the Father’s holy will for our lives.
Donations in memory of Luke may be made to Mass Intentions or Catholic in Recovery (www.catholicinrecovery.com).
