James Edward Rose

James Edward Rose was born in Youngstown, Ohio on October 15, 1935, to Charles Frazier and Lavora Rose. Jim was preceded in death by eight siblings: William (Esther, deceased); Virginia (Bert, deceased); Ted (Mary Lou); Calvin (Evelyn, deceased); Richard (Patricia, deceased); Doug (Leona); Gary; Gene (Jeanne). Jim was a 1953 East High School graduate in Youngstown. He enlisted in the Air Force a year later, serving 20 years as a mechanical technician, retiring with an honorable discharge.

Family was immensely important to Jim. He was the father and father figure to ten children, nine of whom survive him: Terry (Sissy); Doreen (Steve); Mike (Karen); Lori (Dave); Robin; Carol; Chris (Layla); Tammie (Don); Doug. Jim was preceded in death by Gary (Jennifer, deceased). Jim is survived by 24 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

At the time of his death, Jim was married to Dalma Rose, his wife of 48 years. They married in 1975 and managed the Austintown Radio Shack together until 1981, when Jim, Dalma and their youngest children moved to Prescott, Arizona. They spent many adventure-filled years traveling throughout all 50 of the United States and numerous countries from Europe to China and places in between. Jim spent his final years with Dalma in Fallbrook, California.

Jim was a man who valued family, God and his country and instilled in his children and grandchildren the importance of respect, honor and ethical living. His grandchildren knew him as a legendary man of adventure, hearing from their parents the tales of camping with the bears in Canada; hiking the Grand Canyon in the heat of summer; exploring caves in Montana and Wyoming; trekking in the Rockies of Colorado – every year a new adventure. From tents to campers to motor homes, Jim and Dalma journeyed across the country almost every year; choosing new places to explore while also making it a point to see as many relatives as possible. He was able to maintain a close relationship with much of his extended family because he put the effort forth to do so. Jim loved nothing more than gifting his adventures to others, encouraging family to come along with him and Dalma whenever possible.

Jim was personable; a great conversationalist in one-on-one conversations, curious and interested in the experience of others. He was sometimes unfiltered with his words and had no poker face, never hiding his true thoughts. Yet those he adored knew as much, as he was also gentle and loving.

Jim began his new life as an angel on August 27, 2023. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, a doting father; a fun-loving grandfather and uncle. He is deeply missed by all his family and friends who knew and loved him.

Jim will be honored with a military graveside service on October 20, 2023 at 10:15 am, at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside County, California. A celebration of his life will be held at the family home in Fallbrook at 1:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Jim’s memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
