Stephen W. Carroll passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends at the age of 79. He was born in Jay County Indiana the youngest child of Rowena and Victor Carroll. He was a graduate of Muncie Central High School, class of 60’ and a Ball State Graduate of the class of 69‘, majoring in accounting and becoming a CPA. Meeting the love of his life later in 1963 and marrying Jackie (Carroll) in 1964 after a brief few months’ courtship. They were in school together in Muncie Community Schools, even being in the same second/third grade class but not meeting until their early twenties. They then spent the next nearly 57 years as an amazing example of love, loyalty, support, and companionship for everyone he knew.
Stephen was a longtime member of the Indiana Certified Public Accounting Association, and the National Association of Accountants. Working in Indiana and Arizona, having a long career with Whitinger Company and then opening a partnership in 1989. He was a founding member of what is now Cardinal CPA and later partnering with Cardinal Capital. Serving the people and businesses of Muncie for over forty years. Stephen had the heart of service and giving back to the community. He served as a board member, treasurer, and president of the Indiana Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and United Way with nearly twenty years of supporting the organizations and their goals.
Those that knew him, knew him as kind and almost funny man. His humor was developed with his cousin Patty, best friend since childhood Gene, and siblings. Constantly spreading his dad jokes and stories. He was always there for his family and those in need. After spending many summers with family in his parent’s hometown in Petersburg Indiana, he developed a great level of compassion and love for his family and community. Welcoming four foster children into his home, loving them, supporting them, and having a lifelong relationship with his family. He taught all his children to work hard, love deeply, smile frequently, find the joy in the small things, and not sweat the small stuff.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Rowena (White), Victor Carroll, and stepmother Mae (Dixon), his siblings James, Sue, and Carol-Jean, his best friends Gene (Hurst) and Merlyn (Houk), his oldest child, Kemberly, and his foster daughter Sandy. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 57 years, Jackie (Houk), children Jack (Jeni), Bart (Jen), and Marie (Brad), and foster children, Jimmy, Phyllis, and DeAnna (Bill), his 16 grandchildren and another one on the way, and his 10 great grandchildren.
