Dorothy Mary (Dillon) Bradbury
Indianapolis, Indiana – Dorothy M. Bradbury, age 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 26, 2020.
She was born May 21, 1925 in Delaware County, Indiana, at the home of her Null grandparents, to Charles Joseph and Gladys (Null) Dillon.
Dorothy was a 1943 graduate of Cowan High School. She enjoyed as many social activities as she could work into her calendar. She took lessons in singing, tap dancing, and piano. Her first school recital was “Ask the Professor”. She was a graduate of Ball State University and worked for several years for the Muncie City Schools Cafeteria department and then for Ball State’s Teachers College.
In the mid 1940’s, Dorothy worked for Ball Brothers along with her lifelong friend, Clara Rice. They would spend part of their lunch break walking over to Alexander Drugstore near Heekin Park to get ice cream. The only exception was payday when Dorothy’s father would take her and as many of her friends as he could fit into his car downtown to cash their paychecks. Dorothy and Clara, avid antique enthusiasts, went on to start a local Antique Club that they both enjoyed for years.
Dorothy was married to Robert F. Bradbury for seventy-three years (November 8, 1945 until his death February 3, 2019) by Reverend William Sayer of Friends Memorial Church (Quaker Meeting), Muncie, Indiana. She sang in the church choir, helped with the annual church bazaar and many church meals. She enjoyed the fellowship of the Builders Class for thirty-five years. She and her husband enjoyed traveling the world with several members of the Builders Class.
Dorothy was an accomplished cook and was well-known for her sweet tea and gingersnap cookies. She even cooked a perfect apple pie in a wood-burning stove during a family fishing trip in Canada. Among her hobbies were stamp collecting (since childhood), and antiquing (or any other kind of shopping). Dorothy also participated in several socials – home economics, bridge, bowling, western movies. Add to all this a great sense of humor! Her wit never failed to bring laughter to everyone who knew her.
Dorothy deeply loved her family of which she is survived by her two sons: Bruce (Jennifer) of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Bill (Janine) of Union, Kentucky; her three grandchildren, Sara Bradbury Blevins (Bill) of Indianapolis, Indiana, Justin Bradbury (Elizabeth) of Union, Kentucky, and Josh Bradbury of Union, Kentucky; four great-grandchildren, Kirsten (10) and Kaylin (8) Bradbury, Franklin (7) and Valerie (4) Blevins; her sister-in-law, June Miller and her two daughters, Sandy Hawk and Sharon James.
