Laura Geralene Hughes

Laura "Geralene" Hughes, age 82, of Morganton, passed away on Thursday, November 4, 2021. Geralene was born the daughter of the late Geree and Bessie Whisnant Smith on September 2, 1939 in Burke County.

Geralene was a dedicated worker who was retired from the Drexel Heritage Plant 60 with over 30 years of service. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister and friend. Geralene was loved by so many and will be greatly missed

Along with her parents, Geralene is preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Johnson; a brother, Steve Smith; two sisters, Betty Carswell and Becky Norwood; and a special niece, Angie Dyson.

Those left behind to cherish Geralene's memory include her husband Clines "Ray" Hughes; a daughter, Vickie Loveless and her fiancé Larry Brown; a grandson, Craig Loveless; an adopted daughter, Christie Johnson and her fiancé Mike Randolph; a granddaughter, Iva Smart and her husband Ryan; two great grandsons, Damian and Ethan Freeman; a great-great granddaughter, Delaney Freeman; two sister-in-laws, Jean Patton and Linda Johnson; and a brother-in-law, Doug Hughes and his wife Betty. Also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 in the Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in the Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, November 9, 2021 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
