Mrs. Hunter was born in Burke County, NC on December 11, 1928 to the late James N. and Laura Rutherford. She was married to the late Samuel Hunter who preceded her in death in 1992. Mrs. Hunter was a lifelong faithful member of Shiloh AME Church in Morganton, where she regularly attended until her onset of declining health. With the Church, she sang in the choir and was a member of the Stewardess Board No. 2. Mrs. Hunter loved the Lord and delivered a testimony, daily. She was known to say, “I’m glad I still have my mind.” She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by a son, Robert “Bob” Hunter; a daughter in law, Linda Carson Hunter; three brothers, Jim, Joe Bill, and Leroy Rutherford; and two sisters, Doris Forney and Texi Forney.
Survivors include a son, Samuel Edward Hunter and wife Cheryl of Knoxville, TN; a daughter, Rev. Vernadean Hunter-Starks and husband Howard of Morganton; two brothers, Ernest Rutherford of Morganton and Paul Rutherford and wife Connie of Philadelphia, PA; three sisters, Martha Caldwell and husband Manley of Morganton, Regina Cuthbertson and husband Benjamin of Morganton, and Rev. Anne Darty of Philadelphia; a sister in law, Rev. Annie Bell Corpening of Morganton; eight grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral will be conducted at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at Shiloh AME Church in Morganton with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Beatty officiating. Interment will follow at the Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the Church.
