Georgia Adele Webb

May 18, 1926 – August 22, 2012

Adele was born into “royalty.” Her family was mostly responsible for the creation of Morgan City’s Mardi Gras history, and many wore the crown. Adele’s mother Leta Prohaska Miller was queen of Cervus in 1914. Adele herself was introduced to the celebrations as early as 1933 when Little Miss Adele Miller, in a silver costume, a duplicate of her father’s (King Cervus VI), presided at the table displaying the gifts” (souvenirs and favors for the dukes and ladies in the court). Then in 1939 Queen Adele along with King Thomas Hamilton reigned over the Children’s Court, sponsored by MCHS PTA. Her next reign as queen was in 1950 with Ed Patterson as her king. Thus culminating her royal trip through Mari Gras Thrones. Adele was the first queen of the new Krewe of Adonis in1976. However, it was not as royalty but as a caring, benevolent woman that Dell supported the arts through donations to and work for Community Concert Assoc., WYES Public Broadcasting, and our local Tuneweavers. Morgan City Public Library benefitted through her campaigning to keep the library downtown, and Lawrence Park has seen hundreds of children play on the bright new playground equipment donated by Dell. She served as chair of the Cancer Memorial Fund for East St. Mary Parish, and through her husband, Harvey Webb, she became an avid worker for the blind and in projects through the National Assoc. for the Blind. Adele was an entrepreneur and self-employed. She and Harvey operated Webb Music Company, and later Adele’s Lingerie Shop replaced the music store. On Federal Avenue, Adele helped host a new venture-Harvey’s Restaurant. Adele Miller graduated from Sacred Heart Academy and attended SLI in Lafayette. She used to tell her friends she “ran away from home to join the circus, for about 6 hours.” Dell was a story-teller, keeping anyone who would listen entertained for hours. Dell’s stories included the Hub Club and Shell Inn and some “fictional non-fiction.” Her brothers called her Scarlett. She loved Big Band music, and dancing, and swimming, and tennis. Golf took her from the links in Berwick to grander courses all over the United States and to St. Andrews in Scotland. However, Dell was not only an athlete; she was an avid reader, even as her sight was failing. Adele Miller Webb was a presence! She made others feel important, and she never met a stranger. She kept us listening, laughing, and always going back for more. The world will have an empty place without Georgia Adele Miller Webb telling her stories her way.

Adele is survived by her loving brother, Bill Miller and his wife, Janet Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Marie Miller; two brothers, James Miller and Samuel Miller Jr. and their wives.

Acting as pallbearers will be Bob Aucoin, Don Breaun, Alex Campbell, Ryan Campbell, Mario Manfre, and Bill Pecararo.

Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Friday, August 24, 2012 at Hargrave Funeral Home and continue Saturday, August 25, 2012 from 8:30 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. and burial in the Morgan City Cemetery will follow the Mass.
