With her loving family in attendance, Helen Arzu passed away on December 10, 2022 at her residence in Moreno Valley, California at the age of 89. Helen was born in November 1933 in Dangriga, Stann Creek, Belize to her late parents Justin and Cleofa Martin.
Helen graduated from Saint Catherine's Academy and taught at the secondary school level before migrating to the U.S. with her husband who had joined the U.S. Air Force. Although she left Belize in 1959, her students and fellow teachers continued to show her appreciation throughout her life.
As a military wife, a woman of deep faith, and matriarch Helen led a quiet life of service. She managed her family relocations, including seven interstate moves. For several years, she worked nights and weekends in support of family, including 10+ years at Montgomery Wards, Service Desk in Riverside. After 23.5 years, she retired from her full-time position at the Assessors Office, County of Riverside.
Helen dedicated work breaks and after work hours to praying, particularly the Adoration. She was involved in the rosary and bible study groups at St Francis De Sales and St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Churches in Riverside, as well as ministries such as the Food Bank, Rosary Makers, and to Seniors and the Sick at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Moreno Valley. Helen received multiple awards and gifts of gratitude for her service both from the County and religious organizations. Helen was also known for and generous with her cooking, sewing and crocheting. And quietly, with love and consistency, she assisted and sent care packages to family members in Belize.
Helen, an indigenous Garifuna woman, is survived by her children: Aloma Arzu, Angela Arzu, Pauline (Egbert) Higinio, Aynn Arzu, Allan Arzu (Celina), Anthony Arzu (Crystal). She is also survived by Sally and seven grandchildren who put a special light in her eyes whenever they visited. Helen will also be forever remembered by nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Max Arzu, also Garifuna, and her siblings, Bishop O.P. Martin, Joyce and Erica.
Helen devoutly loved God. Her life emulated the love of Jesus towards others. The love Helen received in return held her peacefully, up to the time she passed away.
Flowers for the Viewing and Funeral or donations to St. Christopher Church are welcome. Please indicate, by memo, that the church donation be allocated to the Food Bank or Ministry to the Sick.
