In 1973, Melanie graduated from Hendrick Hudson High School. She received her Bachelor’s from Mercy college with an additional number of certifications specializing in substance abuse counseling. She worked at facilities like The Phoenix House and other recovery institutions. But she particularly enjoyed working with young women rebuilding their lives at My Sister’s Place. Before retirement she had returned to the corporate world working at places like HOP Energy as a Corporate Credit Installation Analyst where she had record breaking contributions to the company, but also created many friendships.
When she was not working or keeping up with her father Harry, Melanie was extremely active. She enjoyed visiting her YaYa friends down in Texas and Louisiana and her extended family in East Branch, NY. Whether it was camping, horseback riding, kayaking, or making a trip to Saratoga, she always accepted a challenge. When staying close to home and spending time with her kids, Melanie always looked forward to visiting Justin and Lesley and spending time with her granddaughters. Reagan and Brielle always sent “Mimi” home with pictures they had colored together and jewelry they had created. She could often be found watching her daughter coach volleyball in the Hendrick Hudson volleyball program and loved rooting them on at States.
Melanie’s involvement with local organizations cannot go unnoticed. She was a Lifetime Member of the Cortlandt Engine Ladies Auxiliary with 52 years of Service. Not only had she served as a Past President but was also on several of the committees. In January of 2019, Melanie joined the Cortlandt Engine Company along with Montrose Fire Department. She was an active member of the Montrose Fire Police, served as Financial Secretary in 2024. One of her favorite things was to act as Head of the Memorial Garden from 2022-2024.
She is survived by her son Justin Polomcean and daughter Alexis Agosta. Justin and his wife Lesley are the parents of Melanie’s twin granddaughters, Reagan and Brielle. She also leaves behind her father Harry VanTil, her sister Joann Zeoli (Tommy) and her brothers Keith VanTil (Tina Calcutti) and Kevin VanTil (Joanna). She is also survived by a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. She always tried to remain in touch with them and stay close to.
She was predeceased by her mother Delia VanTil, her sister Sharon Lape, as well as additional family members.
