Herbert Wilton Winkelmann, passed away on April 5, 2024, at the age of 82, after several years of poor health. Herbert was born on March 7, 1942 in Peekskill, NY to the late Herbert Gustav and Phoebe Jane (Booth) Winkelmann. He was a graduate of Hendrick Hudson High School, class of 1960. He learned the heating and air conditioning business as a technician at Lakeland Merit Armstrong. He soon became the guy who was able to fix the units that other technicians had difficulty fixing. After a few years, he started his own business, repairing and installing oil boilers and central air conditioners for the next 20 years. He became a teacher at BOCES, instructing new students in the heating and air conditioning trade for several years.
Herb and Vicky purchased the most dilapidated buildings in Verplanck, with the help of his family, they renovated them into some of the nicest buildings in Verplanck. He was an avid student of World War II all his life. His children claim that he has watched every TV documentary on the subject. He learned to cook by watching Food TV programs and he and his son-in-law, Ken Brody, developed a rib recipe that was better than anything from any rib joint that we ever ate at.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Victoria Lund; his four children Laura Brody, Steven Winkelmann, Liz Winkelmann and Thomas Winkelmann; his six grandchildren Alex Brody, Evan Brody, Katie Brody, Matthew Brody, Brendan McGuigan and Tyler McGuigan.
Visitation is for scheduled for Monday, April 8th from 2-4 & 7-9pm at Edward F Carter Funeral Home, 170 Kings Ferry Road, Montrose, NY 10548, where a prayer service is scheduled at 8pm at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
