Eldest son of T.V. Burke and the former Genevieve Smith (both predeceased). He was predeceased by his wife, Elaine, a sister, Helen Lovell; And is survived by a sister, Mary Marilley, and a brother Norman, of Calgary.
He is survived by his three children: Daniel Patrick (Lai Lai), Thomas Vincent (Josee), and Valerie (Brendan), and four grandchildren: Blake (Jessie), Larken, Declan, and Brendan, along with 13 nephews and nieces.
The last surviving member of the Montreal (Daily) Herald which folded in 1957, Tim’s ensuing career included long stints at the Ottawa Journal, Montreal Star (twice) and The Gazette.
After many years covering police, courts, and special features, he launched the Journal’s first city column (“Below The Hill”) and later introduced the first city column at The Star (“Tim Burke”).
In 1971, he accepted the challenge by Gazette managing editor Denis Harvey to cover the hockey beat. In 1973, he won the National Sports Writing Award for describing the stellar role Montreal played as a friendly gateway for black athletes coming into the big leagues.
Visitation will be held at Collins Clark MacGillivray White Funeral Homes, 5610 Sherbrooke St. West, Montreal, Quebec H4A 1W5 on January 5, 2024, 5-9pm. Funeral will be held January 6, 2024 at 10am at Church of the Ascension of Our Lord, 375 Kitchener Avenue in Westmount.
