William “Hal” Moore, Jr., 79, a resident of Montgomery, died on Saturday, February 3, 2024, as a result of complications following heart surgery. Hal was born in Auburn, AL on December 13, 1944, to William Hal Moore, Sr. and Leone Ragland Moore. He was their cherished only child. Hal attended school here in Montgomery and obtained his degree at Troy University in 1968. He proudly and honorably served his country as a member of the National Guard for six years.
From the time he was a child, Hal was consumed with flying and knew that he wanted to fly airplanes. He earned his pilot’s license at a young age and began teaching flying lessons at the Montgomery Airport. From there he progressed through various positions, earning additional certifications with each company, flying everything from piston twins to jets. He worked with Capital Airlines for a number of years, flying to various locations throughout Europe, North Africa and the Caribbean. Hal worked his dream job with Eastern Airlines, becoming a captain on the Boeing 727 airplane. He was flying a trip back to Atlanta the day that Eastern Airlines shut down. He also flew as a corporate pilot with Blount Engineering and Winn Dixie Corporation, among others. He then decided that he needed more stability in his career and earned a nursing degree from Troy University in Montgomery. He went to work for the State of Alabama Health Department and retired after 20 years. During that time, Hal also worked for Montgomery Aviation as a charter pilot and spent many happy days flying trips all over the US and the Caribbean.
Hal’s biggest hobby in life, in addition to being a voracious reader, was motorcycles. He had a motorcycle from the time he was a young teen, of all brands and models. The last few years he had a Can-Am Spyder which he and Jennie loved to ride all around the back roads of Alabama.
Hal is predeceased by his parents, William Hal Moore, Sr. and Leone Ragland Moore, the love of his life and mother of their children, Susan Todd Moore, and his wife, Faye Faulk Moore. He is survived by his wife, Jennie Pursley Moore, his two beloved children, Megan Moore Moeshlin (Brent) and William Kevin Moore (Gretchen), his grandsons Daylon Todd Moore (Savannah), William “Liam” Lucas Moore and Christopher Alexander Moore, his step granddaughter Olivia Moeshlin, his first great grandson, who is due in July, and his stepdaughter Becca Stone. Hal’s greatest passion in life was his children and grandchildren. He was the true rock and patriarch of the family and Megan and Kevin sought his counsel, advice and interaction daily.
Hal was a cherished, adored father, “Granddaddy”, and husband who will be forever missed and held close in our hearts.
A private family service will held.
