He is survived by his beloved wife of 11 years, Donna Cox McCarty, his son, Will McCarty (Elizabeth), his daughter, Ashley McCarty Luke (Colin), his sister, Catherine McCarty Kelley (Chip), and grandchildren: Catherine Luke McQueen (Nolan), Robert Luke, Caroline McCarty, Christopher McCarty and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. William L. McCarty Sr., and his mother, Mary Ruth DeBardeleben McCarty.
Bill was born in Andalusia, Alabama on December 31, 1939 and lived in Montgomery, Alabama for most of his life. He graduated from Sewanee Military Academy, the University of Alabama, and the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. He completed an oral surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma Medical School. He also served in the Alabama Air National Guard.
He practiced oral surgery in Montgomery for almost 40 years. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a member of the Second District Dental Society and a member of the Alabama Dental Association. He was pioneer in the treatment of temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), surgically and medically, and designed new surgical techniques for TMJ patients. He authored and co-authored textbooks used by numerous dental schools, including “Clinical Outline of TMJ Diagnosis.” He had the privilege of lecturing around the world on TMJ treatment and was co-founder of The Normandie Study Group for advancement of education in the field of TMJ diagnosis and treatment and oversaw numerous clinical studies. He also served on the medical staff of Baptist Medical Center South where he operated on trauma patients. Throughout his career, he never lost sight of the guiding principle of putting patients first.
Bill was active at Ramer Methodist Church and enjoyed the fellowship there. He also loved his neighbors in the Ridgeland Farms community and spending time with grandchildren.
A visitation is planned for Wednesday, June 2nd from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm at a Leak Memory Chapel. A graveside service will immediately follow at 1:00 pm with Rev. Cooper Stinson officiating. Pallbearers are Robert Luke, Christopher McCarty, Nolan McQueen, Wayne Miles, Ronnie Sullivan and Todd Sullivan. Honorary pallbearers are Jamie McKenzie, Charlie Moore, Grady Price and Gilbert Sellers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Montgomery Humane Society.
