Walter was known as a family man, sport car enthusiast, and devoted veteran. He enlisted into the United States Air Force in 1968, he then was in Vietnam from 1970-1971, Thailand from 1972-1975, commissioned in 1984, and retired in 1993. Walter also graduated from the University of Colorado in 1983 with his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science. He loved to travel, decipher and work with all forms of technology, supporting the local community that Maxwell Air Force Base assigned for military personnel, and enjoying the company of his family and friends while being the life of the party and entertaining those surrounding him, and enjoying good music such as the Beach Boys, John Denver's song, Rocky Mountain High.
Walter's biggest passion was his family. He was a truly loving husband of 48 years, father, and grandfather. His family expresses just how much of a positive impact he had on their lives and that his essence will live on through their memory.
Mr. Sunderman is survived by his wife, Duangchantra "Chan"; sons, James and David (Leslie) Sunderman; granddaughter, Chloe; and brother, Donald (Mary). He is predeceased by his father, Walter; mother, Francis; and sister, Verneta.
A friends and family visitation for Walter will be held Friday, July 12, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home & Cemetery, 10505 Atlanta Highway, Montgomery, Alabama 36117. A graveside service will occur Friday, July 12, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, Alabama 35115. A graveside service will occur Friday, July 12, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 2:42 PM at Alabama National Cemetery, 45M7+8H, Montevallo, AL 35115.
