Thomas Larry Wright was born March 3, 1936, to Vertris M. and Felix C. Wright in Montgomery, Alabama. Larry went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 23, 2023. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, September 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Frazer Church, 6000 Atlanta Highway, in Montgomery. A celebration of Larry’s life will be held on September 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Frazer Church. Services will conclude with a burial in Alabama Heritage Cemetery, 10505 Atlanta Highway, in Montgomery.
Larry was a committed Christian and a strong family man who dedicated his life to serving his church, his family, and his fellow man. His entire working career was spent serving in the military and law enforcement.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Jackilee McClendon Wright, his two sons, Scott (Laura) and Brandt (Joyce), and his brother-in-law, Jim McClendon. He also is survived by his grandchildren, Brian, Kathleen, Caroline, and Cameron, and his great grandchildren, Bo, Bianca, Sadie, and Saylor.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Henry, and his sister, Mary Ella Marshall.
Larry graduated high school from Starke Military School. He held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Auburn University.
Larry served on active duty in the U.S. Army in 1961 and 1962 and continued his military career in the Alabama Army National Guard until his retirement as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 in the Criminal Investigation Command.
Larry began his law enforcement career as an Alabama state trooper in September 1959 and served in the Highway Patrol Division, Alabama Bureau of Investigation, and Executive Security. He attained the rank of captain before leaving the Department of Public Safety to accept the position of assistant director of the Alabama Law Enforcement Planning Agency. Larry was appointed director of the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center in 1982 and retired in 2002. In retirement, he worked part-time as security in the Alabama House of Representatives and the Senate from 2003 to 2021.
Larry was a long-time member of Frazer Church, where he served as an usher.
His hobbies included attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, Auburn University athletics, and spending family time at the lake.
