Shirley Maxwell McKenzie, age 87, died on December 11, 2021 at John Knox Manor. She was preceded in death by her husband Colonel (Retired) Howard E. McKenzie, her parents William Ray and Nina Maxwell and her sister, Lieu Bailey Porter. She is survived by her brother, Billy Maxwell (Joyce) her children Carrie McKenzie Meriwether (Lee), Susan Marie McKenzie, Michael Howard McKenzie (Andrea) her grandchildren Caroline Meriwether Breland (Zac), Anne Meriwether Perry (Boothe), Catherine Lee Meriwether and Faith Marie Evans, her great grandchildren, Anne Whitney Breland, Emily Catherine Breland, and Charlotte Meriwether Perry.
Shirley was a long time member of Frazer Church. She was an avid supporter and member of the Pike Road Community. She served as a past president of the Mt. Meigs-Merry-Pike Road Historical Preservation Society, an Advisor to the East Montgomery County Historical Society, a member of the Pike Road Civic club and the Pike Road Community Club. She also served as the Leadership Council President of the American Cancer Society from 2010-2011 and was an active member of Maxwell Officers Wives Club. Shirley was an artist and member of the Montgomery Art Guild. She enjoyed painting with her ladies art group affectionately know as the "Divas".
Shirley was full of energy and enthusiasm and enjoyed meeting and getting to know people. She was a great listener and was full of wisdom and advice. She will be missed by all those who were fortunate to know her. A special thanks to the care takers at Wesley Gardens and John Knox who so graciously cared for her.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Wesley Gardens Assisted Living or John Knox Manor in Montgomery, Alabama. Graveside service will be held on Friday, December 17th at 10:00 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery.
