Peggy Sue Zahnd Pennington, age 92, of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away on Friday, December 13, in Nashville, Tennessee. Peggy was born April 30, 1932, in Florence, Alabama, to John Arthur and Nettie Blanche Wallace Zahnd. She was preceded in death by two siblings who died in infancy, her parents, her brother, Douglas Earl Zahnd, her sister, Loyce Elaine Zahnd Rogers, and her loving husband of 68 years, Donald Roy Pennington. She is survived by her sons, Donnie Pennington and Art (Donna) Pennington, grandchildren, Joy (Will) Binkley and Jason Pennington, and great-grandchild, Seth Tipton. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Peggy was a 1950 graduate of Coffee High School in Florence and went to work for Southern Bell as a telephone operator, where she met Don, the love of her life. The young family moved to Montgomery in 1955 where she raised her children and became an expert seamstress, making most of her own clothes, as well as sport coats and shirts for her husband and boys. Over the years she enjoyed her neighborhood coffee club, playing bridge, learning to paint, playing her piano, Ladies’ Bible Class, and, eventually, extensive travel. Peggy was a charter member of both the Lakewood and Vaughn Park Churches of Christ. She was pleased to be able to convert her husband, who went on to become a church elder.
A family and friends visitation for Peggy will be held Friday, December 20, 2024 from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM. Following the family and friends visitation will be a celebration of life graveside at 3:00 PM at Greenwood Cemetery, 909 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL 36109.
