Michael Todd Owens, 59, of Montgomery, AL passed away in his home on December 15, 2024. He was born on November 25, 1965, in Greenville, AL; a Thanksgiving gift to his parents Willa Dean and Lamon Owens. Mike is preceded in death by his grandparents L.K. and Ruthie Bell Owens, Lawrence and Cora Mae Eggers, and parents, Lamon and Wila Dean Owens. He is survived by his wife Penny; children, Todd Owens (Amy), Morgan Hollingshead (Chris), Ashley Groce (Jacob); grandson, Jackson Hollingshead; brother, Kenny Owens (Edna), sister Teresa Sides, brother-in-law, Thomas McLendon; bonus sons Steven Champion and Kevin Champion; and several nieces and nephews. Mike also found himself a mentor and sometimes surrogate dad to so many other young men who also feel his loss. Mike imbued a joyful and quirky spirit that will be missed by many.
Always ready for excitement, Mike gave up the opportunity to play bass in a band to join the US Army where he served honorably in the 101st Airborne Division, serving in the first Gulf War: Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and the Battle of Mogadishu. Following his discharge from the Army, Mike focused on civilian life and his family. In his later years, whether it was riding motorcycles with Penny, watching football with Todd, talking on the phone with one of his many friends or picking up rocks and pinecones with Jackson, Mike found his greatest joy when spending time with family and friends (and when he ate chocolate). As an amazing friend, father, grandfather and devoted spouse; Mike, and the joy he brought to countless lives, will be missed. Visitation will begin at 1 P.M. on December 21, 2024, at Leak Memory Chapel. Services will begin at 2 P.M. at the Leak Memory Chapel with Pastor Steve Richardson officiating. Burial services will follow at Greenwood Serenity Memorial Gardens.
