Marilyn Atkins, age 83, of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away on June 1, 2024. Marilyn was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was a homemaker, freelance writer, and cartoonist. She took immense pride in being published in numerous magazines. Marilyn was known for her deep love of her children, her sense of fun and humor, and her unwavering loyalty to those she loved.
Marilyn attended Sidney Lanier High School and furthered her education at Auburn University and Troy University where she met her husband, David Atkins. She was a long-time member of Dexter Avenue Methodist Church.
In her free time, Marilyn enjoyed writing, painting, reading, dancing, and the occasional sock and comb fight with her three boys. She found joy in creating and illustrating cartoons and greeting cards, reflecting her deep passion for the arts.
Marilyn is survived by her sons Charles Marvin Atkins (Julie) and Patrick Vaughan Atkins (Betsy), grandchildren John David Atkins III (Kathalynn), Patrick Vaughan Atkins, Jr (Jamie), Sarah Elizabeth Atkins, Jenna Haynes (Geoffrey), and Brian York, as well as 5 great-grandchildren. Marilyn was preceded in death by her father Vaughan Buford Williford, her mother Nellie Pearl Pearson Williford, husband John David Atkins, son John David Atkins II, and brother Marvin Williford.
A celebration of life graveside service for Marilyn will be held Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Greenwood Serenity Memorial Gardens, 909 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, Alabama 36109. In lieu of flowers, contributions to support the arts in your area would honor Marilyn's memory.
