Age 86 • Pike Road, Alabama
Lelia Banks Burwell Boggan, 86, died peacefully at home on December 4, 2024 after an extended illness.
Lelia was born on January 18, 1938 in New Orleans, Louisiana. When she was a young girl, her father’s medical practice brought the family to Montgomery, Alabama which she called home for the rest of her life except for short times in Auburn, North Carolina, and Japan.
Lelia graduated from Sidney Lanier High School and later, in mid-life, returned to college and earned a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University at Montgomery. The primary work of her life was being wife and helpmate to her husband of 67 years, Robert “Bob” Boggan, and a loving mother to their son, Glen Boggan.
Lelia had an active life prior to her illness and she enjoyed a multitude of activities from sailing to sewing, from baking to Bridge Club. While she traveled the world with her mother, she often spent weekends at the farm driving one tractor while her husband drove the other. She was a superlative cook and kept a warm and inviting home which was always open to friends and family.
Lelia was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Philip Burwell and Lelia Banks Burwell, by her brother Philip B. Burwell, by her nephew, Banks Burwell, and by several dear friends, Marianne, Susan, Mary Louise, and Jane. We are certain that their reunion has been spirited!
She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Boggan, son, R. Glen Boggan, daughters, Laurie Johns (Mike), Amy Ford, Catherine Ryals, and Sarah Dent, nephew, Carter Burwell (Emily), grandson, Oak Johns, great nephews Carter, Jr. and Jackson Burwell.
The family would like to extend their most sincere thanks to Star Dent for caring for Lelia for these many years. We also thank Home Care Assistance, SouthernCare New Beacon Hospice and Home RN’s nurses and caregivers for their assistance in these last months and days.
The visitation will be at 10:30 a.m. with the funeral service following at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at Ramer Methodist Church, 15153 Hobbie Road, Ramer, Alabama. There will be a private interment in the family plot at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery. Pall bearers will be Carter Burwell, Joe Loftin, Tommy Logan, Tripp Sellers, Scott Thompson and Roger Ward. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Ramer Methodist Church or to the Humane Society of Elmore County.
