James MacLeod (Jimmy) Parker, Sr. of Montgomery, Alabama, born October 9, 1930, passed away June 14, 2021 at the age of 90 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Charles Daniel Parker, Sr. and Margaret MacLeod Parker; sister Margaret Adele Parker; brother Charles Daniel Parker, Jr. (Sarah Denton); niece Margaret Louise (Meg) Parker and daughter-in-law Ashley Benton Parker.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 56 years, Peggy Sewell Parker; two sons, James MacLeod Parker, Jr. and John Sewell Parker (Ashley Main); grandsons John Allen MacLeod Parker and James MacLeod Parker, III; nephew Charles Daniel Parker, III (Kim Foster); sister-in-law Gloria Sewell Abernathy and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
Jimmy attended Barnes School and Starke University School and graduated from Lanier High School. He served two years in the Army in the 31st Dixie Division during the Korean War before earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Auburn University.
Jimmy faithfully worked in his family’s furniture business, Bishop-Parker Furniture Co., for over 65 years, serving as President for many of those years. He was well-known and admired within the furniture industry, widely regarded as a Southern gentleman and a true “furniture man.” He valued his relationships with many loyal customers and suppliers and they appreciated his deep knowledge and unwavering integrity.
Jimmy was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hike, fish, canoe, raft, garden and engage in just about any other outdoor pursuit, often with his wife, sons and grandsons. He was humble, generous, and compassionate and through his business and his church he helped lift up many who had fallen on hard times.
Jimmy loved his family. His wife was the love of his life and he was so proud of his two sons and grandsons. He loved being with all of them, whether on family holidays or cook-outs in the backyard.
Jimmy was an active member of Young Meadows Presbyterian Church and valued the friendships he had with every member of his Sunday School class. He had a strong faith in Christ and knew his salvation was sure.
After a private burial, the family will receive visitors from 1:00 to 2:30 on Thursday June 17 at Young Meadows Presbyterian Church, 5780 Vaughn Rd, Montgomery, AL 36116. Following the visitation, a Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 at the church.
