James was an exceptional athlete lettering in basketball, baseball, football, and track. He graduated from Coldwater High School in 1959.
After joining the United States Air Force, James met and married Karen Sue Glendy Lachenmyer on December 24, 1961 in Buttermilk, KS. Honorably serving for 20 years, James retired in 1979 as a Sr. Master Sargent. He then managed the Montgomery International Speedway. After graduating with honors from the Montgomery Police Department Academy, ultimately serving as Commander of the Accident Investigation Unit, he retired after 20 years with Montgomery Police Department.
James is preceded in death by his son, Thomas Lee Lachenmyer and grandson, Caleb Elijah vonEschenbach. He is survived by his loving wife, Karen Sue Glendy Fleming; his children, Jeffrey Lamar Lachenmyer (Tere), Debra Lynn Lachenmyer (Timothy Dean), Randall Dean Fleming, and Melissa Fleming vonEschenbach (Thomas); his grandchildren, Todd Heindselman (Ellen), Jennifer LeighAnn Smith (Duane), John Thomas Lachenmyer, Michael Lamar Lachenmyer (Krystal), Megan Cheyenne Hackbarth, Russell Lachenmyer, Stephen Lachenmyer, Jacob Aaron vonEschenbach, Joshua Ethan vonEschenbach, and Thomas Jackson vonEschenbach; and his great-grandchildren, Jordan Smith and Sophia Lynn Lachenmyer.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 23rd, 2018 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 2:00 pm with Chaplain Baxter Morris officiating. Burial immediately following at Alabama Heritage Cemetery. Pall bearers will be Eulon Lee, Timothy Dean, Fred Knighton, Thomas vonEschenbach, Guss Fleming, and James Dinsmore.
