George John Germanos passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on April 16, 2024, at his home. George, the first son of the late John and Gloria Germanos, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on May 27, 1932. A long time resident of Montgomery, George graduated from Sydney Lanier High School in 1950 where George played football. Thereafter, George attended and graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in business.
After serving in the Korean War, George married the love of his life, the late Kike Germanos, on June 18, 1961. They would settle and raise their children in midtown Montgomery. For several decades, George worked for the Starke Agency and Turner Insurance Co., selling insurance, which worked well with his nature and love for meeting people.
George was unequivocally reliable, steadfastly positive and engaged. George was very active in all aspects of life. George loved taking his children, and later, his grandchildren to Destin or the mountains. George was also a skilled musician, playing the mandolin, tambourine and harmonica.
George’s interest in sports continued throughout his life. George enjoyed pickup tennis games with his daughter, Anna, and was a dedicated cheerleader at his son, John, football games. Later in life, George enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sports events, never missing an opportunity to encourage and applaud. George was a runner, participating in the Azalea Trail Race in Mobile, the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, and the Montgomery Jubilee until he was 70. George was an indispensable member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, dancing at Greek night, making the Camp Stew for the annual Labor Day barbecue, and participating in AHEPA. George loved going to Alabama games with his friends. In sum, George always put his family, his friends and his faith first.
George is predeceased by his loving wife, Kike, his brother Nick, and parents John and Gloria Germanos. George is survived by his daughter, Anna, and her husband Michael Kontoes, her son, John Germanos, and his wife Lynn; sister, Katherine Galanos; grandchildren Kike (Matt) Kotsianas, Spyros Kontoes (Tavishee), George and Anna Grace Germanos; great-grandchildren, John and Michael Kotsianas; and, a host of devoted friends, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Special appreciation is given to his caretakers of the last year, Kathy Gordon, Michelle, and Alma.
