Earl Donald Heath, (86) longtime resident of Montgomery, AL, passed away at home on Monday, March 6, 2023. Earl was born in Derby Line, Vermont to Gary Earl and Eleanor Heath in 1937. After graduating high school in 1955 he enlisted in the USAF, and was married to Janice Ormsbee Heath two months later. He served over 14 years as an avionics technician , supporting navigation, bombing and fire control systems on B-47 bombers. He completed his BGS degree from the University of Nebraska and “mustanged” to become an officer in 1970. He then served for 10 years in Information Technology, retiring as a Captain in 1980. He also later completed his MBA from Auburn University. After one year working in the private sector, he returned to Air University as a civilian manager and retired in 2001 as a Director of Computer Systems Development.
Earl was very active in community service over the years and was a member of Montgomery area chapters of Toastmasters International, S.C.O.R.E. (Service Corps of Retired Executives), Retired Military Officers Association, the St. Andrews Society, was an original member of the Montgomery Police Department’s “Volunteers in Police Service” (VIPS) program, served over 20 years on the Board of Directors for the Montgomery Area Food Bank, was a member, chapter president and newsletter editor for AARP, and was active for many years with Rotary International, where he was a three time recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award.
Earl professed faith in Christ at an early age, and he and Janice are members at Whitfield UMC, where he has served as a Trustee, Lay Leader and Sunday School Teacher. In his spare time, Earl enjoyed traveling with Jan, and they have visited Africa, Asia, South America and Europe, along with numerous cruises and bus tours across North America. Earl was very proud of his daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and loved spending time with them.
Earl is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Janice Heath; daughters Rachael (Jamie) Reynolds of Littcarr, KY and Catherine Heath of Prattville, AL; grandchildren Brian (Kristen) Kirsch of Prattville, AL, Austin Reynolds of Knoxville, TN and Heather (David) Kari of Louisville, KY; three great-grandchildren; and his baby twin sisters, Marilyn Heath Spencer of Charleston, NH and Carolyn (Paul) Heath Sullivan of Northborough, MA.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 13, 2023, at 3:00 pm at Whitfield UMC, 2673 Fisk Rd, Montgomery, AL 36111, with visitation preceding at 2:00 pm. The family has asked for no flowers, but will appreciate donations in Earl’s honor to Whitfield UMC, 2673 Fisk Rd, Montgomery, AL 36111, or the Montgomery Area Food Bank, 521 Trade Center Dr. Montgomery, Alabama 36108.
