STUMPE, Dr. Alfred R. (Colonel USAF Retired) age 90, a resident of Montgomery, AL, passed away on March 31, 2015. He is survived by his wife, Tommie Jean (Cahoon) Stumpe; a son A. Robert Stumpe, III of Dallas, GA; a daughter, Susan A. Lewis of Cowarts, AL; seven grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. Dr. Stumpe served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as a PhM 3/C before entering pre-medical studies at Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, TN. He received a B.S. Degree (Cum Laude) in 1946. He received his M.D. Degree from Cornell University Medical College, New York, NY, in June 1949. He was also the recipient of a MpH Degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health in 1957. Dr. Stumpe entered the USAF in 1951 during the Korean War and served with the Air Force until his retirement in 1969. He retired with the rank of Colonel and the aeronautical rating of Chief Flight Surgeon. He was certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (1958). He served as president of the American College of Preventive Medicine (1969) and the Alabama Public Health Association (1988). Dr. Stumpe’s last professional position was Health Officer, Mobile County Health Department, from which he retired in 1990 after 12 ½ years of service.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2015, at Leak Memory Chapel in Montgomery. Burial with full military honors will follow at Greenwood Serenity Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. at Leak Memory Chapel.
Pallbearers will be A. Robert Stumpe, Edward Lewis, William Anglin, Bobby Cahoon, Robert B. Stumpe, Daniel Lewis, Ross Anglin and Jordan Lewis.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church Caring Center.
