Captain Richard Fair Fox

Captain Richard Fair Fox, age 84, of Montevallo, Alabama, passed away on November 11, 2020. He was a 24 year US Army veteran who served three tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star. He spent his second career in law enforcement with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department for 26 years, rising to Captain of Investigations. Following his retirement there, he worked "part-time" as Detective at Columbiana Police Department.

Richard was fiercely dedicated to his sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Myrtle Boothe Fox. He was a thoughtful, generous and romantic husband. Their favorite getaway together was Disneyworld. He was always dedicated to his children, whether spoiling them, coaching them, sharing his love of music, books and puzzles, cheering them on or keeping their secrets. His grandchildren loved Pop, and Pop loved them.

He was a deacon at Ashby Baptist Church and a member of Masonic Central Lodge #70 at Montevallo and Order of the Eastern Star #434 at Montevallo.

Richard was a rabid Alabama fan and to a lesser degree, the New York Yankees. His love of cars, trains and cartoons began at a young age and continued through his life. He enjoyed picking his guitar or watching movies at home with his dogs, Poppy and Boss. His favorite meal was breakfast, but he always had a cup of black coffee close by. He had the mind and hands to put to any problem and solve it. He was a jack of all trades, and a master of all.

He spent his life in service to his church, his country, his community, and his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Coy Fox, Sr. and Arthur Lee Fair Fox; sisters, Eva Cosby and Juanita O'Rourke; and brothers, James Coy Fox, Jr. and Herbert Fox. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Fox; daughter, Darla Fox Hourigan (Trevor Jay); son, Richard Fair Fox, Jr. (Ellen); grandsons, Sean Casey Pugeda, Brannon Richard Fox and Tyler James Fox; brother, Charles Fox (Betty), Everett "Buddy" Fox (Sarah), Johnny Fox (Melinda), and Francis Fox; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 16, 2020 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo). His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo), with burial to follow at Ashby Cemetery. The services may be viewed remotely via livestream at www.facebook.com/rockcofuneralmontevallo. Bro. Shannon Allen will officiate. The family request that guests bring a toy for Toys for Kids in honor of his legacy.
