Bob’s passing brings an end to his generation of children born to Archie and Myrtle Smitherman. He was the fifth of seven children and he always bragged that he was the favorite. He served proudly in the US Navy for 4 years and was a veteran of the Korean War. After a 21 year career, he retired from the University of Montevallo in 1993. The names of Bob’s family will include the traditional terms of “step” and “in law” for identification purposes but his love was not determined by the amount of DNA they shared.
He is survived by Naomi, his wife of 39 years. His son Greg Smitherman, stepson Jeremy Harper, his son in law Scott Jenkins and daughter Cindy Ross. Grandchildren Josh, Ben, Justin, Wes and Mae.
He was predeceased by step daughter, Tina Jenkins.
Bob was an avid coon hunter for many years and once bragged about hunting for more than 60 nights in a row. He enjoyed a good tangueray gin martini, the excitement of going to a casino and any food that had peanut butter as a main ingredient.
In lieu of flowers his family is asking you to do a random act of kindness for someone. Whether it be a surprise bouquet for your special someone, a meal or gift for a person in need or a phone call to check on family or a friend, please let someone know you care.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2024 from 10 am - 11 am at Rockco Funeral Home in Montevallo, Al with a service to follow at 11 am. A private family burial will take place at the Alabama National Cemetery.
