Elizabeth Ann Regan Haynes, 72, died June 17, 2014, in her home in Temple City, CA after leaving behind the struggles of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). A memorial service was held Friday, June 27 at Live Oak Memorial in Monrovia, CA.
Elizabeth was born October 30, 1941 in Jeffersonville, IN, to Harry T. and Betty J. (Engel) Regan. She graduated from Silver Creek High School in 1959 and soon after moved to the California High Desert. She attended Antelope Valley College.
In 1966, she met and later married Charles (“Chuck”) Haynes. One of Elizabeth’s favorite stories was how she met Chuck while working as a sales girl at Sears: “One day, this guy came in to buy socks. I told the older gal I worked with that I had met the cutest extra-large shirt I had seen in a long time.” Elizabeth refused Chuck’s offer of a date, so Chuck continued to come in to buy more socks. Over a month passed and finally Elizabeth agreed to have coffee during her lunch break. “The date was to an Italian restaurant where Chianti was ordered. I was a novice at wine and practically fell asleep at the table. He almost had to carry me to the car. However, he was a gentleman about it, and I was impressed. He continued to come in to buy socks. A year later we decided to marry. We went to Las Vegas and got married in his sister's home. When we returned to California, friends came to visit and asked me to make coffee. I said, ‘I don't know how to make coffee.’ They were dumbfounded and questioned me. I said, ‘He didn't marry me for my coffee making ability.’ It was the perfect answer. They made coffee. And…Chuck had enough socks to last for eight years.”
Elizabeth and Chuck raised three children—Jeff, John, and Jenny—through Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, soccer, coaching, camping, baseball, and endless Halloween costumes. Elizabeth’s friends know her to have been a generous person quick with a smile and ready with support. She served her local community through the Girl Scouts of Sierra Madre and other organizations. Ever the creative person, she had cupboards of craft supplies at hand for any visiting child and wrote poetry on the sly. In her late 60s, when she could not find the perfect painting for her family room wall, she registered for classes and delighted her friends and family with dozens of still lifes, florals, and panoramic scenes.
Elizabeth’s smile is missed and remembered by many. She is survived by her husband, Charles Haynes; her son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Michelle Haynes of Trabuco Canyon, CA; son and daughter-in-law, John and Shawna Haynes of Westminster, CA; daughter and son-in-law, Jenny and Jerry Sanchez, Jr. of Peoria, AZ; grandchildren Deven and Madi Haynes of Temple City, CA; Taylor and Mason Haynes of Westminster, CA; and Jerry (III) and Julia Sanchez of Peoria, AZ; brother, Steve Regan of Dallas; brother, Jack Regan of Lancaster, CA; and brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Evelyn Regan of Quartz Hill, CA.
