Warren "Bill" Bickett Morgan Jr.

Warren Bickett “Bill” Morgan, Jr., 75, of Marshville, NC, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018, in Winston-Salem, NC. Bill was the son of Warren Bickett Morgan, Sr., and Eula Mills Morgan, and was born in Monroe, NC, on September 6, 1942. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, John Drue Morgan.

Bill was a lifelong resident of the New Salem community. He grew up on the family farm where his parents and four siblings carried on the generations-old traditions of farming and producing much of the food for the family table. His parents were also career schoolteachers, fully active in the life of their schools and classrooms. Thus Bill had two great influences on his upbringing, farm life with all its associated activities, and education. Bill joined Euto Baptist Church at a young age, and taught Sunday school there for years.

After graduating from New Salem High School in 1960, Bill went on to Wingate University and completed his college degree at UNC-Chapel Hill. He then taught at Ansonville Elementary School in Anson County and after one year at Ansonville, he was asked to be the principal at Polkton Elementary School. But Bill had always wanted to be a lawyer, and after two years at Polkton, he went to law school at Wake Forest University, graduating in 1971. Upon graduation, he joined the District Attorney’s office for the 20th District, which included his home, Union County. He enjoyed working in the courtrooms of the five constituent counties and making friends throughout. After a number of years in the District Attorney’s office, he opened his own private practice in Monroe. He handled a variety of matters, civil and criminal, and always gave his best efforts to his clients. Like his experience teaching school, he made many lifelong friends in Monroe and Union County as he practiced law. He retired from the practice of law in the 1990s and devoted himself to farming with other members of his family, an activity he had maintained across the years, along with many other interests. One of those interests was in tractors and bulldozers, ranging from a 1922 International tractor to an old D9 Caterpillar.

Bill devoted himself to his family and his friends, doing much good in many people’s lives. He had remarkable intelligence, insight and generosity of spirit, and enjoyed nothing more than to be with others working on a project and telling good, usually humorous stories. In later years, even though he was slowed by the need for dialysis, his love for his family, friends and community was still much in evidence. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his sisters, Mary Alice Wicker and her husband; Harry, Nancy Elaine Sills and her husband, Milton; a brother, James Reid Morgan and his wife, Elizabeth, and by one niece and six nephews.

There will be a viewing on Saturday May 26 from 1-2 pm at Euto Baptist Church in Marshville, located in the New Salem Community. A service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held at the church at 2 pm with interment immediately following at the church cemetery.
