Charles Wilson Helms, age 90, a resident of Brookdale Monroe Square in Monroe, NC, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 12, 2015. He was born January 21, 1925 in Monroe, to the late Octavius “Dock” and Lillie Boone Helms. He was a graduate of Benton Heights High School. Wilson proudly served his country in the United States Navy in World War II and was present at the invasion of Normandy. While on leave from the Navy on Christmas Day 1945, he married the love of his life, Mildred Hinson Helms, who predeceased him in 2010. Wilson was a lifelong supporter of the North Carolina Tar Heels and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Business Administration in 1950. He and Mildred went on to welcome two children into their lives, Belinda and Tim. Wilson was a longstanding and loyal employee of Exxon, where he held several positions in various states. He retired from Exxon in 1986 and he and Mildred returned to Monroe where they enjoyed spending time with family and friends, gardening, volunteering and being actively involved in their church, First Presbyterian of Monroe. Wilson touched countless lives during his time on earth and was known for his compassion, kindness and good nature. He was the foundation of his family and provided them with constant love and support. He is survived by his daughter Belinda Thompson and her husband John of Monroe; his son Tim Helms and his wife Becky of High Point, NC; and two grandsons, Chris Greenwood and Nick Helms. The memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church, 302 E. Windsor Street, Monroe, NC 28112. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Wilson’s name to First Presbyterian Church of Monroe.
