Montrose died July 29, 2015 at the age of 95. Mr. Taylor graduated from
Murphy High School, where he served as Senior Class President and was
a member of the National Honor Society. He was a graduate of Auburn
University, where he was President of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. At
Auburn he was a member of the Auburn Legislative Action Network,
Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership honor society and Spade
Honorary society. Under his leadership as editor of the Auburn
Plainsman, the newspaper won its first All-American honor rating in
1943.
He was Company Commander in the 31st Infantry Dixie Division which
trained in Fort Sill, Oklahoma and served in Okinawa, Japan for 2 years
in the Occupation Force after World War II.
In 1953 he founded and was President of Buck Taylor Manufacturers
Sales and continued to be active in the business for 61 years.
He was President of the Mobile Library Board and a board member of
the Mobile Carnival Association. He co-authored a book with Emily
Hearin on Mobile Mardi Gras titled Let the Good Times Roll. He was a
deacon in the First Baptist Church of Mobile and a member of the
Mobile Baptist Association ACTS Television Committee. He was a
member of the Samford Society of Auburn donors and a member of the
Mobile Power Squadron.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Hybart Taylor, his children Virginia
Hybart Taylor McLure, Dr. William Buck Taylor III, Charles Louis
Hybart Taylor, Laurie Anne Taylor Strauss, eight grandchildren and sister,
Florence Davidson Taylor Hollinger.
A funeral service will be held at 3 pm Monday August 3, 2015 at the First
Baptist Church of Mobile. It will be preceded by visitation beginning at
2:30. Interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery followed by a
remembrance celebration at the Mobile Mardi Gras Museum.
