One of God’s faithful servants, William “Bill” M. Sumrall, went home to Glory on Monday, December 30, 2019. He is preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Violet Sumrall; his brothers, Calvin and Benjamin Sumrall. His son Gene and daughter, Brenda Kaye Sumrall; grandson, Michael Rosser a granddaughter, Alicia Ann Sumrall and by his first wife, Maxine Coats.
Bill was born in Hattiesburg, MS. His family moved to Mobile when he was a teenager. He managed a group of newspaper delivery boys, for the Press Register. At the age of 18 he felt the need to serve his country and joined the Navy. He served on the USS Iowa, USS Columbus and the USS Albany. After his discharge from the Navy, he was employed at Brookly Field as a Quality Control Inspector. He transferred to Oklahoma City to work at Tinker Field as Household Goods Inspector, completing 33 years of civil service. Being retired did not mean not working to him. He always found jobs. His last one was with Enterprise, driving cars to various cities in AL. MS. LA and Ga. Bill was a faithful member of Dauphin Way Baptist Church, serving in any capacity, from parking lot, teaching Sunday school or Department Director. He was a charter member of the Monday Morning Men’s Prayer breakfast group. Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Martha Gunn Sumrall; sons, Robert Sumrall and David Holland; daughters, Linda Wigley, Janie Brown and Elaine Drury; 11 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be Jan. 4, 2020, at Dauphin Way Baptist Church at 1:00 PM with Visitation 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. He will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Saraland, AL. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to Dauphin Way Baptist Church or your favorite charity.
