Stephen Gregory “Greg” Alexander, a ladies’ man, music loving, good time having resident of Bayou la Batre, Alabama passed away on January 24, 2024. Greg grew up in Coden, Alabama. He was the third child of five children. He was a true middle child and “black sheep”, and he sure loved being the black sheep. Greg went to Alba High School. He loved going out to eat, a last minute trip to the casino, cracking jokes, spending time with his family, and playing and watching sports. Being from southern Alabama, he was an avid fan of Alabama football. He had a great sense of fashion, although his uniform look was short pants, brown leather flip flops, a collared button up Polo shirt, and a can of Skoal Original Fine Cut. Greg was a people person. He made friends everywhere he went. If you ever met him, he probably asked you a hundred questions about your life, and he somehow remembered every small detail.
Greg spent his life working as a shrimper, an electrician, and a maritime engineer. He worked his entire life, but don’t think for one second that he didn’t have any fun. Fun was his middle name. Although he wore many hats in life, he loved no hats more than his ones that read “Daddy” and “Pappy”. He loved and adored his children and grandchildren, and he never missed an opportunity to tell the world about them. Greg definitely did things “his way”. If there was ever a person to live up to Frank Sinatra’s “I Did It My Way”, it was Greg. He did what he wanted in life, and he never took the easy route. He enjoyed the simplicities of life just as much as he did the luxuries.
In November 2023, Greg was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, an aggressive grade IV brain cancer. He spent the last three months of his life completely surrounded by his loved ones and fighting a battle only God could help him win. He remained tough, positive, and grateful, and he never lost his faith in God. There is a void that Greg’s passing leaves in many people’s lives.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Henry and Annie Mae Alexander; and his daughter: Mary Katherine Alexander. He is survived by his daughters: Felicia Alexander, Stefanie (Tim) Joosten; his sons: Stephen “Britt” Alexander and Branden Alexander; his grandchildren (his two most favorite people in the world): Hut Joosten and Annie Joosten; his sisters: Rhonda (Allen) Mayfield, and Kelly (Roger) Milne, his brothers: Glennie Alexander and Darwin Alexander; the mother of four of his children: Katherine Gazzier; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many cherished friends.
Greg’s funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at Coden United Methodist Church at 11 am. His family will receive friends and loved ones at the church on Monday, January 29, 2024 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and on Tuesday January 30, 2024 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Interment will be at Odd Fellows Cemetery.
