October 28, 1931 - January 24, 2024
Retired Colonel Robert Phyfer Hall, D.M.D. passed away peacefully on the morning of January 24, 2024, holding his wife’s hand while surrounded by loved ones. He was 92.
Robert was born on October 28, 1931, to Helene Phyfer Hall and Robert Sollie Hall in New Albany, Mississippi. Following his mother’s death at his birth, he was raised by his aunt, Ruth Holland Hall, and uncle, Marvin Harrison Hall in Mobile, Alabama. A 1950 graduate of the University Military School, Robert
began a family legacy of UMS-Wright students. He held varsity letters in several sports, most notably football, which earned him a scholarship at the University of Georgia under legendary coach Wally Butts. He was inducted into the UMS-Wright Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985.
After his freshman year in Athens, Robert served in the 371st Convalescent Hospital of the U.S. Army for a year during the Korean War. After his service in 1955, he completed a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Mississippi Southern College, where he was also a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and the Alpha Epsilon Delta Honorary Society. He later pursued dental studies at the University of Alabama School of Dentists, obtaining his Doctor of Dental Medicine in 1958. It was there where he met his devoted wife of 66 years, Harriot Huey of Roanoke, Alabama.
Robert’s dental career, which spanned over 50 years, was marked by his commitment to providing charitable dental services to the community. He especially enjoyed his work with Little Sisters of the Poor. For 18 years, he practiced dentistry with his son, David Hall, D.M.D., and son-in-law, Frank Friedman, D.M.D., who both continue to serve the Mobile community. Robert was a member of the American Dental Association, a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry, and a fellow of the American College of Dentists, concluding his distinguished career in 2008.
In addition to his dental career, Robert earned the rank of Colonel in the Alabama Army National Guard, from which he retired after 20 years of service. He served with the 161st Medical Battalion at Fort Whiting in Mobile, Alabama. Robert later served as the Alabama Army National Guard State Dental Surgeon and Deputy State Surgeon at the State Area Command in Montgomery.
When Bobby wasn’t in the office, he often played golf, shared jokes, enjoyed a glass of wine on Mobile Bay, and spent time with close friends at the ever-infamous Boggy Gut Hunting Club. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mobile.
Dr. Hall is survived by his beloved wife, Harriot Huey Hall; his brother, John Wilton (Carol) Hall; his children, Julie Hall (Frank) Friedman, Robert Phyfer (Becky) Hall, II, Frederick Holland (Heather) Hall, and David Christopher (Pam) Hall; his grandchildren, Christopher Knox (Anna Russell) Friedman, Richard
Awbrey (Martha) Friedman, Andrew Harrison (Lee) Friedman, Hallie Hall (Jared) Elrod, Bee Hall, Mary Helene Hall, and Julia Eugenia Hall; and his great-grandchildren, Christopher Knox Friedman, Jr., Edmund Cole Friedman, William Kelly Friedman, Cameron Roth Friedman, and Benton Awbrey Friedman.
The family expresses their deepest appreciation to the caregivers from Memorable Occasions Elderly Care — Tracey Miller, Ann Leath, Juanita Davis, Maricka Thomas, Mahogany Henderson, and Stacy Williams — for their kindness and loving care.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at 1 p.m. at Pine Crest Cemetery, 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile, Alabama. Memorial donations may be directed to UMS-Wright Preparatory School, 65 North Mobile Street, Mobile, Alabama 36607.
