OF
MARY LOWELL STEPHENS
Mary L. Stephens, born December 26, 1929, was the youngest of four children born to Frances G. and Ralph E. Lowell. She grew up in Mobile, AL, and graduated from Barton Academy.
Mary married Clyde W. Brantley on April 2, 1949. They were married for 23 years prior to his death in 1972. They had two daughters— Susan Brantley Schanbaum, Nashville, TN; and Mary Jane LaVecchia (David), Mobile, AL.
As a young widow, Mary set out on her own to build a career as a sales representative for GAF Corporation in Lafayette, Louisiana. Although she missed her family, she loved and excelled at her job in sales, and was the recipient of the President’s Award in 1977. She was transferred to Tampa, FL where she met her 2nd husband, Lt Col Richard B. Stephens, U.S. Army Ret. (deceased). They were married on March 2, 1987, and Mary gained another daughter, Major Deborah Stephen-Munoz, USA Ret. (Jesse), Gulfport, FL; and son, Lt Col Richard B. Stephens, Jr. USAFR, Ret. (Nathalie)., Oklahoma City, OK.
Together Mary and Dick had 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mary’s life revolved around her family who lovingly called her May May! She loved them all unconditionally. The family also included her pet Conure named Sunny. Sunny was her constant companion in her later years, and she loved that bird like a child. We lost our beloved “May May” on April 2, 2024. She was preceded in death by her two husbands and her three siblings — Evelyn L. Trainor, Robert E. Lowell, and Gordon (Boots) Lowell. The family wishes to thank Southern Care Hospice and Springhill Senior Residences for the loving care and comfort they provided during Mary’s last months of life. There will be a casual “Celebration of Life” gathering for friends and family on Saturday afternoon, April 13th, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the home of Jeremy and Sara Martin.
