A Mobile native, Carol was known for her commitment to environmental advocacy and her ability to light up a room. She believed that people could join together as a powerful and effective force for protecting our local natural treasures as well as our global natural environment.
When Carol returned to live in Mobile in 2006, she immediately became active in the community, and was recognized nationally for her work to protect and restore the natural beauty and resources of Alabama.
“My fondest childhood memories took place on the waters of coastal Alabama in the early 1950s,” she said. “The Mobile-Tensaw River Delta and Mobile Bay waters are still beautiful and captivating, but they are at risk...There are incredible, abundant, diverse wildlife and vegetation to observe and seafood to feed our families.”
Carol has worked on Sierra Club’s Gulf Crisis Leadership Team for the last 10 years on post BP Oil Crisis issues regarding Natural Resource Damage Assessment, the Restore Act, and Coastal and Marine Restoration Projects. She has been the Sierra Club liaison to Earth Day Mobile Bay since its beginning in 2008.
Most recently Carol was serving as Secretary, Legislative Chair, and Conservation Chair of Sierra Club Alabama Chapter, and Vice Chair and Program Chairman for Sierra Club Mobile Bay Group. Her work was focused on increasing awareness and action related to the Climate Change Crisis, Environmental Justice, Air Quality, Plastic Pollution and PFAS, Alabama Water Management Plan, Coastal Conservation and Dredging Practices throughout the state, Coal Ash in Alabama, Clean Energy and Beyond Fossil Fuel, Storm Water Management, Protecting Southern Forests from expanding wood-pellet industries, and Sustainable Agriculture.
Carol also served in leadership roles in the Daughters of the American Revolution as well as the Leinkauf Historic District Neighborhood Organization and the The Mobile Historic Development Commission.
Her dedication to lifting up her community knew no bounds. Every obstacle became an opportunity for innovation and deepening her understanding of the world. Whatever she endeavored to achieve, she achieved while setting a new standard for excellence and uplifting all who shared in her journey.
Carol’s friends would say that she was the kind of friend that you felt gratitude for knowing and they lovingly referred to her as “Miracle” because of her extraordinary creative energy and amazing accomplishments. Her voice continues to sound out in the hearts and minds of all who knew her. It was a voice that valued truth, compassion, and most of all nature and community. She is remembered as an environmental activist, artist, innovator and creator, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, leader, and mentor. Carol’s spirit truly is larger than life and she will always be loved.
Carol was a lifelong member of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter Crystal D. Davis, her brother L. G. Adams, III, and her three nephews: August G. Adams, W. James Adams, and Bryant E. Adams and predeceased by her parents L. G. Adams, Jr., Marjorie Molyneux Adams, and her sister Linda Ruth Adams.
