Dr. Lloyd Andrew Manchikes M.D. passed away at home in Mobile County, AL on Saturday July 10th, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Manthis “Pete” Manchikes and Alice Louise Manchikes. He is survived by two sisters, Jan Garbett (Jerry) of Milan, IL. and Sue Ellen Gruenler (Rob) of Aurora, Colorado; four nieces, Lara Komon (Michael), Angela Richardson (Matthew), Jenna Dunham (Nicholas), and Caroline Barton (Paul); fourteen grandnieces and grandnephews.
Dr. Man, as he was referred to by many, graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 1982. He specialized in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine and Pain Medicine during his career as a Physician. Dr. Manchikes was a Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), a fellow in Critical Care Medicine, post doctoral fellow in pain medicine, and certified as an HBOT chamber operator. He had over 30 years of patient care experience, treating patients with a very broad range of pathology in and out of the operating room, in the practice of anesthesiology and was also involved in the complex physics and pharmacology of traditional pain management.
Dr. Manchikes was passionate about helping United States Veterans that suffered with Traumatic Brain Injury, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Concussive Brain Injuries through the treatment of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. He owned Integrated Pain Management of Alabama and Southern Brain Injury Clinic, where he worked diligently, advocating for Veterans healthcare rights.
Andy was a character that beat to his own drum. He had a host of friends and colleagues in the Mobile area who became like family to him over the years, including a special friend and co-worker, Patrick O’Brien, who worked alongside him for the past eight years. He also remained close to Terry and Bob Hudepohl of Northern Kentucky. Bob and Andy were in the same graduating class of 1982, University of Kentucky Medical School.
Andy was an avid cyclist, who could usually be found on his bike when he wasn’t working or tending to his awesome bird, Luigi. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
