Joseph Daniel Owen was born in Meridian, Mississippi on July 6, 1951. After about a week, he moved to Mobile, where he has lived ever since. He has been an active parishioner of St. Monica Church all his life. He is at present a Liturgy Reader.
In 1969, Joe graduated from Murphy High School, where he was a member of the Marching and Symphony bands. He attended USA, and went to work at ADDSCO, a shipbuilding firm. He was married in 1973 and divorced in 1982. He joined Mobile Fire Department after two years with Chickasaw Fire Department. He was a member of the Honor Guard and retired as Captain in 2012. He received his AA in Fire Science from Bishop State in 1990 where he was a member of Theta Alpha Omega and valedictorian. He did further study at Memphis State University.
He joined Loop Lodge #895 in 1977 and was Worshipful Master in 1983-84. He became Treasurer in 1985 until 2019.
He joined Mobile Valley Scottish Rite in 1977, and was elected 33rd degree in 1995. In 2003, he was appointed Personal Representative of the SGIG, and served until 2012.
He was Monarch of Al Hassan Grotto in 1984, and is now Treasurer.
He joined Mobile York Rite in 2003. He is a member of the Alabama York Rite College, Red Cross of Constantine, and is a KYCH.
He is also a member of ABBA Shrine and the Order of Amaranth.
Joe was an Advisor of Mobile DeMolay for about 30 years. During that time he was awarded the Honorary Legion of Honor and served as Deputy Member of the Supreme Council. He was also an advisor for Mobile Assembly #3, IORG and was awarded the Grand Cross of Color.
In January 1983, Joe met Ginger at a Rainbow-DeMolay function. He was initiated into Jeptha Chapter #41 on November 18, 1983 by Ginger who was the Worthy Matron. They were married April 16, 1988. In 1992, they transferred to Mobile Chapter #348. He served as Worthy Grand Patron in 2017-2018. He is currently on the Service Dogs Committee for the General Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
Joe is also a member of a Mardi Gras Mystic organization.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lucile Owen, and his brother, Bernard Owen. He is survived by his wife, Ginger Owen; brother, Richard Owen; niece, Meredith Seaman, as well as her two children, Owen Seaman and Kelton Seaman.
Visitation for Joe will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2023 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, Alabama. There will also be a visitation from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. at St. Monica’s Catholic Church on Monday, January 16, 2023. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow, and then interment in Pine Crest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Service Dogs of Alabama in Hope Hull, or the Daughters of the Nile endowment fund for Shriners Hospitals.
