James David McPhillips was born in Mobile, Alabama on January 16, 1927 and died on November 17, 2015. He attended St. Mary Catholic School as a boy, graduated from McGill Institute and Spring Hill College where he later served on the Board of Regents. He founded Modern Homes and Equipment Company in 1954 and was active there until the day he died. Also active in numerous organizations during his long life, he served as a director of AmSouth Bank. A quiet man, he treasured time spent with his family and life on Mobile Bay. He followed the tides and weather and was always ready for a game of golf or to wet a hook. He loved a good project and taught his daughters they could tackle anything. He made sure they understood the fundamentals of football at an early age and his family of women loved Saturdays in the fall and talking football almost as much as he did. A man of few words and the highest of principals he will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hilda Druhan McPhillips; father, Henry Manning McPhillips; sisters Rosemary McPhillips Bender and Nell McPhillips Lott and brother Henry Manning McPhillips, Jr. He is survived by his wife of almost sixty-five years Sally Tibor McPhilips and daughters Lee Fernandez (Jim) and Dru Jones. Grandchildren: James Fernandez (Melissa), Allen Jones (Lindsay), Sally Jones and Gwen Fernandez. Great grandchildren: Eleanor Frances Fernandez, Joe Jones, Amelia Fernandez and Ty Jones; a large and loving extended family and circle of friends. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in Old Springhill Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Frank Joseph Lott, Jr., Joe Allen Jones, III, James McPhillips Fernandez, James Manning McPhillips, Frank Maury McPhillips and Thomas Benton Bender. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to L'Arche Mobile or the charity of your choice.
