He was born in Birmingham on December 26, 1930, the son of Mack Estes Townsend Sr. and Bess Crabbe Townsend.
He is preceded in death by both of his parents, two brothers, Mack Townsend Jr. and Earl Townsend, and a sister, Joy Hester.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Rita Norburn Townsend; daughter Janet Dlugos (Stephen), Hampton, VA; two sons, Scott Townsend (Cheryl Smith), Martinez, GA, and Steven Townsend (Creath Edens), Mobile, AL; eleven grandchildren, Jason Dlugos, Jarrod Dlugos, Mary Katherine Dlugos, Amanda Townsend Mills (John), Austen Townsend, Taylor Townsend, Rusty Townsend, Robert Townsend, Kyndel Edens, Evelyne Edens, Chase Edens; and one great grandson, Jack Mills. He is also survived by a brother, Don Townsend, and a sister, Vicki Holcomb.
He loved his family deeply. He was sunshine in our lives, and we will miss him dearly.
A memorial prayer service will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Somerby Room at Somerby of Mobile, 901 Somerby Drive, Mobile, Alabama.
A memorial service will be held on Good Friday, April 14, 2017, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at Independent Presbyterian Church, 3100 Highland Ave. S., Birmingham, Alabama. Reverend Brian Lays will officiate.
