Horace Thomas “Tom” Sutton, 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 13, 2024 in Athens, Alabama, but was a resident of Harvest, Alabama for several years prior. He was born to John Ira Sutton, Sr. and Aldora Walker Sutton on November 18, 1931 in Mobile, Alabama. Tom served with the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in 1954. He graduated from the University of Mobile (formerly Mobile College), 1969 BA in Psychology, and received the H. Austin Pharr Award for Most Outstanding Student. Tom lived a life in Christ, and served 25 years as a missionary in Latin America (Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colombia, Bolivia and Venezuela) with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local #505 for over 70 years.
Tom followed the University of Alabama Football, Women’s Gymnastics, and Women’s Softball. He loved meeting new people, as well as traveling and exploring the different areas in which he lived.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Jo Barlow Sutton; parents, John Ira Sutton, Sr. and Aldora Walker Sutton; brother, John Ira Sutton, Jr.; sister-in-law, Shirley Toliver Sutton; and brother, George Walker Sutton.
He is survived by his daughters: Kaye Sutton, Tuscaloosa, AL, Kristy Sutton Howell (Thomas) Northport, AL, and Laurie Sutton Collins (David), Harvest, AL; grandchildren: Allyson Collins Sons (Josh), Belvidere, TN, Andrew Thomas Howell (Leah), Hamilton, AL, Lindsey Margaret Collins, Birmingham, AL, and Kathryn Lynn Howell, Northport, AL; great-grandchildren: Jacob Michael Sons, Caleb Lucas Sons, Lynleigh Kate Howell, and Jackson Thomas Howell; extended family: Marian Sutton and Georgia Wolfe Engwall (Wyatt); as well as nieces, nephews, and other cherished family and friends.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 1 p.m. in Pine Crest Cemetery on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for international missions or Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child shoebox ministry.
