Glen Porter Brock, Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 8, 2024 at his home in west Mobile, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen Porter Brock, Sr. and Esther Goodwin Brock, and by his brother, Paul Warrington Brock. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley Forbes Brock, his son, Glen Porter Brock III (Carolyn) of Houston, Texas, his daughter, Susan Forbes Brock of Atlanta, Georgia, his sister-in-law, Louise Brock McCarron, his nieces and nephews, Paul Warrington Brock, Jr., Bette Brock Rutan, Valerie Brock Guiles, Sherry Brock McGowin, and Richard Goodwin Brock, and two grandchildren, John Joseph Brock and Julia Elizabeth Brock.
Porter was born in 1937 in Mobile. He attended University Military School, from which he graduated in 1955. He graduated from Auburn University with a B.S. in Mathematics in 1959. At Auburn, Porter was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He was in the ROTC and later served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. Porter received his JD from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1963 and received his LLM in Taxation in 1964 from New York University Law School.
Porter was a partner in the law firm that is now Hand Arendall Harrison Sale, where he practiced law for his entire career as a member of the firm’s Tax, Trust & Estate, and Estate Planning practices. He was a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel and a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), as well as the past president of the Tax Section of the Alabama Bar Association. In 2013, Porter was selected as “Lawyer of the Year” in the tax law practice area by Best Lawyers. He served as President of the Mobile Lion’s Club and was President of the Community Foundation of South Alabama from 2006 through 2008. A lifelong Mobilian, Porter served as a page in the 1948 Mardi Gras Court and was a member of the Order of Myths Society.
Porter and Shirley were members of Springhill Baptist Church. They enjoyed traveling and visited six continents and many different countries. Porter also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Geraldine and her team for their kindness, support and care during the last couple of years of Porter’s life.
There will be a graveside service at 11:30 a.m., April 18, 2024, at Pine Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to The Salvation Army or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
