Professor Dorothy E. Hayes, Sculptor/Graphic, Owner of “Dorothy Door”, a commercial studio in New York City, an innovative Artist creating abstract works from Plexiglas, Lucite Acrylic and other plastics, a native of Mobile and longtime resident of New York died July 31, 2015 at the Youthful age of 79 at Mobile Infirmary.Professor Hayes graduated from Central High School in 1953 where she served as a member of the Sigma Tau Service Club, school Newspaper, National Honor Society, National Debate Club (of which she travel nationwide). She served vigorously creating floats and decorating cars for the annual Mobile County Training School vs. Central High School Turkey Day Classic. She was a 1953 graduate of Alabama State College where she was a member of many organizations including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.. She demonstrated her creative ability by creating beautiful floats for the Alabama State Turkey Day Classics.She continued her education in New York studying at Pratt Institute School of Visual Arts, Cooper Union School of Art and New York Institute of Advertising earning certificate degree and Doctorate Equivalency. In addition, she worked as a Graphic Design Art Director, Art and Production Supervisor, Layout and Mechanical Artist for various firms, i.e., advertising agencies, publishers and art and production houses in New York City. She was recognized at the Fine Arts Museum of South at Mobile (formerly Mobile Art Gallery) and was honored by the City of Mobile and State of Alabama.Throughout her childhood Prof. Hayes was a faithful member of the Franklin Street Baptist Church. She was passionate about her family and spread her humor and knowledge amongst them. She was a vivid lover of art, creative thinking and education. She opened her New York Loft to so many visitors, giving them a one-on-one tour of her beloved New York City.A Memorial will be held, Saturday August 8, 2015 with Delta Sigma Theta Omega Omega service at 1:00pm at Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin Street, Mobile, AL. A memorial service will begin at 2:30 p.m. She leaves to cherish her memories and accomplishments a devoted sister Lauvenia H. Flowers (Detroit, Mobile), Aunt Ethel Lorraine Couch (Mobile), Cousin Dr. Johnelia P. Hardy Armstrong (Montgomery/Maryland) and dedicated and devoted niece Lauretta Turnquest (Carl), (N.Y./Mobile). And in addition she leaves nieces and nephews Eugene Hayes (Cubie), Montgomery, Al, Carolyn Crawford, Birmingham, Al, Debra Dubose, Barbara Ann Hayes, Michelle Sims, Melanie Hayes and Carl Hayes of Dayton, OH, Michael George (Thelma), Reno, NV, Karen George, Lynn George, Henry Earl George (Susie) and Johnelia Whittaker all of the Atlanta, GA area, Felicia Brunson, Vannessa Penados (Mario), Wallena Elliott (Rudolph) and Darryl Hayes (Victoria), Pittsburgh PA, Derrick and Dewayne Hayes, North Carolina, Chase Hayes, La Jolla, CA, Anthony Hayes (Jamelah), San Diego, CA, Carol Marhall (Nathan) and Tracey Perryman of Plano, TX, Lamont Hayes (Sylvia), Paul Hayes and Rudolph Hayes(Cathy), of Mobile, AL, Sharon Gipson (Charles) Farmington Hills, MI, Toyja Bridges, Kimberly Dotch-Heard (Kenneth), Carmen Dotch-Ragland (Antonio) all of Detroit, MI also numerous great nieces/nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends who mourns her loss. She was very passionate in providing direction and guidance to her numerous nieces and nephews as they individually seek their educational and entrepreneur goals.She was preceded in death by her mother and father , Annie Laurie and Earl Hayes Sr., five brothers, Earl , Eugene Sr., Rudolph, Walter and Carmen and sister, Rosemary George also cousin, Lorriane Tartt Page-Myles and uncle and aunt Dr. John Garrick and Mildred Hardy (Montgomery).
