He was preceded in death by his parents, David Kent and Ethel Mae Scarborough, and daughter, Toika Lynn Sullivan (Lee). He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Annetta Elam Scarborough; one daughter, Annetta Renee Smith (Chuck); one son, David Kent Scarborough, III (Christina); his brother, James Harold Scarborough (Margaret); grandchildren, Paul Howell (Waritta), Lisa Irby (Jason), Joshua Fowler, Lee Sullivan, Shelby Sullivan, Christopher Scarborough, Benjamin Scarborough; and two great grandchildren, Jason and Hannah and countless other loving family and friends.
Papa graduated from Murphy High School in 1955, and moved on to serve as a Chaplain in the US Navy. He then served in the US Army National Guard where, among other duties, he served as a security escort for those that marched from Montgomery to Selma in 1965.
Papa answered the call to the ministry at the age of 10, and never wavered from his calling. After attending the University of Southern Mississippi and graduating from William Carey College, he attended the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and graduated from the New Orleans Theological Seminary. He pastored churches in Mobile and Baldwin County, including Chunchula Baptist Church, where he preached his first sermon as a teenager, and most recently served as pastor up until shortly before his death. Among his honors and accomplishments as a pastor was his creation of the Mobile Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, which continues to this day as an annual event. In addition to his ministry, he also represented several companies in his insurance business.
Papa was never without a dollar in his pocket for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a treat for the family pets, or a cup of coffee nearby. He loved his family and friends fiercely, and was completely selfless when it came to making sure that everyone he loved had everything that they needed. He was deeply committed to spreading the love of God to everyone that would listen. He changed countless lives, and for that his rewards are great.
