Adelaide Theresa Kling Diener Woodruff, born in Mobile, Alabama on 5 March 1920, and died on November 6, 2021, at the age of 101. She graduated from Murphy High School in 1937 and attended Huffstetler Business College. Her first employment was with The Mobile Gas Company and then the International Paper Company in Mobile.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ignatius A. and Addie Antoine Kling, and her husbands: Raymond F. Diener, Sr. and Cedric A. Woodruff.
She was employed by various organizations while in the USAF with her first husband when they were stationed throughout the U.S. and overseas during and after WWII. She was a U.S. Civil Service employee in the U.S., Japan and the Azores. After her husband’s retirement from the Air Force they lived in Wisconsin and Illinois. She was retired from the school system in Illinois in 1976 and later she and her husband retired to Mobile. Ray, Sr. passed away in 1984. In 1989 she was married to Cedric A. Woodruff, who was a retiree from the U.S. Army. Cedric and she had graduated from Murphy High School together. He passed away in 2008. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and belonged to the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, a member of the Cosmopolitan Woman’s Club of Mobile, a member of the MOAA (Retired Officers Assn.) Auxiliary and a member of the Murphy High School Alumni Assn. Many years ago she was a charter member of the Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi when it was formed here in Mobile.
Adelaide is survived by her son, Raymond F. Diener, Jr., of Mobile, AL; step-daughter, Camille Woodruff of Evans, GA; step-sons: William A. Woodruff (Beverly) of Midway, UT and Joseph A. Woodruff (Beth) of Franklin, TN; step-grandchildren, Laura Woodruff of Park City, UT., Eric Woodruff (Kary) of Park City, UT, Caroline Woodruff Hodkinson (Peter) of New York, NY, Wade Woodruff (Sarah) of Franklin, TN, Natalie Merry of Superior, CO, and Mackenzie Merry of New York City, NY; great - grandchildren, Evelyn and Nora Woodruff of Park City, UT, Penny and Garrett Woodruff of Franklin, TN, and Oliver Hodkinson on Montauk, NY; sister-in-law, Deanna Diener, of Downey, ID; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Adelaide traveled the United States, Canada, East and West Caribbean, Europe, Japan and other countries extensively and was avidly interested in the history and culture of those countries. She was a kind hearted woman who embraced life and dearly loved her family.
Thanks to all the good doctors and nurses at Springhill Memorial Hospital, especially to Dr. Mark Wiles and Dr. Randy Dotson, for their excellent care and to the Angels at Saad’s Hospice. Thank you to all her good friend for their loving friendship throughout the years.
Funeral Services will be held from Grace Lutheran Church, 1356 Government Street, on Monday, November 15, 2021, from 11:30 am. until the service time at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery, 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile, AL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Grace Lutheran Church, the Wounded Warrior Project, or the Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Program.
