James Martin Stewart, known to all as Jim or Grandpa, passed away peacefully on May 23rd, 2024. Born on March 18th, 1948, Jim grew up in Imperial Beach, California, a stone's throw from the beach where he and his siblings spent countless hours playing. He also split time between San Diego and Liggett, California.
Jim was the youngest of seven children born to Arthur and Helen Stewart. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings: Bob, Ken, Dorothy, and Margie. And, leaves brother Don and sister Kathleen.
Jim leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Laura, whom he faithfully loved and cared for throughout their marriage, even becoming her personal "TJ Maxx allowance provider." Grandpa could often be found patiently waiting outside countless stores while Laura shopped. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Cathy and Steve.
Jim's life was a testament to love, care, and service. He was a devoted husband, father figure, and grandfather. His three grandchildren, Savannah, Tara, and Chris, knew they could depend on him for anything and that he took a keen interest in their everyday lives. He was particularly excited about the arrival of his great-grandson, Jack James Bowsher.
Jim credited his success to his 10 years of service in the U.S. Army (1967-1977; Staff sergeant; medals: National Defense, Good Conduct, Sharp Shooter, Army Occupation – Germany, Army Commendation). During his service, he was stationed in West Berlin during the Cold War and even served in an elite guard unit that shared responsibility with the Soviets for guarding Nazi war criminals. Stories from that time included tales of driving muscle cars on the Autobahn.
Jim’s experience in the Army sparked his interest in medical technology. He furthered his education while stationed in Colorado, earning an Associate of Arts and Sciences in Biomedical Engineering from Regis College. This led to a successful career at Kaiser Permanente, where he rose to become the Director of Imaging System Service for Southern California (1991-2016). His retirement party at the Yacht Club was filled with stories from grateful employees who appreciated his leadership, along with a memorable anecdote about a tie getting sucked into a paper shredder.
Jim was a man of strong faith and a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. He actively participated in his weekly men's bible study, volunteered with disadvantaged youth in Santa Ana, and generously donated to various charities. He also enjoyed giving back to his community by donating food to the pantry from his garden.
Beyond his dedication to family and faith, Jim had a zest for life. He loved spending time on the water, especially in Dana Point. Traveling, snorkeling, cheering on the San Diego Chargers, cooking (especially pizza & key lime pie) and golfing were all activities he enjoyed sharing with his family.
James Martin Stewart will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
