He is survived by his loving family. Born in Durango, Mexico on April 9th, 1940. Pepe was the first-born son of Lupe and Jesus Garcia and was a natural leader of the pack. At just 4 years old he moved to Mission, Texas with his parents and young sister. He joined the workforce at a young age followed by many years working in the fields as a farm worker. The experience of hard work and dedication to self-education ultimately led to a 40-year career in horticulture with Bailey Nurseries.
Family was the core of his being. Pepe married the love of his life, Herminda “Minda”, and soon after ventured out to build their future and family in St. Paul, MN. Living in a new state Pepe developed strong ties to the community and made lifelong friendships. Pepe was a “girl dad”. He raised five independent women and made sure they focused on their education to ensure bright futures. Pepe was committed to keeping his family connected to the Rio Grande valley and made the 1,450-mile road trip every year. Once their first grandchild, Jose, was born, he joined his grandparents on those trips for many years. Pepe adored being a grandpa. He would lay on the floor with toys, watch cartoons, save quarters for arcade games, and overall indulged his grandkids as much as he could; “of all the nursery rhyming tales”. There was nothing needed that Pepe did not try to provide.
Pepe was a kid at heart. He loved to give people nicknames. If you got one, you knew you had made it. He loved animals, especially dogs, and always had one by his side. Pepe was a gifted singer of silly songs and a connoisseur of exceptional music, from Mexican traditional to country and western tunes. Music was ever present in his days as was his appreciation of TV westerns.
He leaves behind his adoring wife of 60 years, whom he called de la O, Herminda, children Minda (Maggie) Garcia, Gloria (Jason) Wehlage, son-in-law Tony (Lupe) Garcia, Jeanett Garcia, and Yadira (Dan) Langton. Grandchildren Jose (Iesha), Sabrina, Daniella, Akoni (Liam), Sarita (Nick), Marianna, Mya, Gabi, Natalia, Xavier, Andre, A.J., Noelle, Alex, Jad, Eli and Adoni. Great grandchildren Melodie, Aubriana, Maya, Alejandra, Rafael, Jibril. Siblings, Maria Huerta, Sonia Torres, Jesse Garcia, Lupe (Tom) Wallner, and Elena Garcia. The entire Maldonado Family whom he loved with all his heart and many other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Guadalupe Garcia, Manuel and Emma Maldonado, and his beloved daughter, Lupe.
