It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the death of Azucena E. Garcia on December 22, 2022. Susie, as she was affectionately known, was born on July 30, 1934, to Eulalio and Cresencia Elizondo in La Grulla, Texas. She had a strong Catholic faith, which was instilled in her by the Sisters of Mercy of the Immaculate Conception School in Rio Grande City. She prayed the Rosary daily and served alongside her husband, Eudocio M. Garcia, in the Order of the Alhambra El Cid Caravan No. 106 and the Sierra Club. Susie was a descendent of a pioneer family who first settled in the area in 1749, as original land grantees of what was then Porción 94. Her family later moved to Rio Grande City in 1937. Susie was blessed with the gift of music from early childhood and quickly became known for her singing and piano playing. She was a soloist for most weddings that took place in Starr County and was the lead singer in the church choir for many years. She married her high-school sweetheart, Eudocio, in August 1956. Her husband was a career military man, serving in the Army for close to thirty years. Eudocio's assignments allowed Susie to reside in Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Ord, California; Norton Air Force Base, California; Fort Hood, Texas; three separate assignment in Munich and Nuremberg, Germany; and a three-year tour of duty in the Panama Canal Zone. Along with her love for music, Susie enjoyed traveling. She and Eudocio visited Europe, the British Isles, Canada, Mexico, and Peru. She also accompanied Bishop Raymundo Peña on a tour of the Holy Land. Left behind to cherish her memory are her husband of sixty- six years, Eudocio (Ed) Garcia; her daughter, Linda (Marc David) Garcia; her sons, Jesse (Irma) Garcia and Frederick Garcia; and her granddaughters, Liana, Lauren, Sarah, Veronica, and Rebecca Garcia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and also her siblings: Odilia Mendoza, Gumaro Elizondo, Zulema Marchan, Eulalio Elizondo III, Minerva Quiel, and Gaston Elizondo. She is also preceded in death by her son David J. Garcia.
